Centacare Kokoda Challenge 2012

Why trek Kokoda for Centacare?
Every day our clients and their families face significant challenges. We invite you to join us in the challenge of ensuring that Centacare can continue to provide high quality respite care to young people with an intellectual disability and their families at Auricht House. We will help you in the exciting challenge of completing the Kokoda Track. We ask you to seek a minimum $600 in sponsorship from your friends, colleagues and associates as tax deductable donations to Auricht House. Or you may wish to raise significantly more and in the process reduce your own trip costs.

Auricht House
One of the most pressing needs for families in South Australia, who have a member with an intellectual disability, is the provision of respite care. Across South Australia there is a grave lack of respite care available. In July 2005 Centacare opened its new respite service, Auricht House at Elizabeth North, for young people with an intellectual disability.

Centacare’s Disability Services currently supports over 70 families, in the north and northeast of Adelaide, with respite care for their family member with intellectual disabilities. The age range of those supported is 13-30 years. Auricht House offers overnight respite, weekday and school holiday activities.

Respite provides opportunities for parents or carers to have a break from caring to spend time with other family members, and to recharge energy levels. Respite can allow parents and carers to maintain the caring role for longer, and can increase the overall quality of family relationships. For the individual with an intellectual disability, respite provides opportunities to socialise, try new things, and be independent from their family.

Ongoing fundraising is essential to meet the costs of running Auricht House and to expand the service to provide respite to more families more often.

Auricht House is named in memory of the late Mark Auricht who had dedicated his fatal 2001 Mount Everest summit attempt to Centacare, and in particular supporting the establishment of the new respite service.
